For those of you that didn't know, I am going to be leaving Spain soon! Tuesday, May 31st is my last day at the school...next Tuesday! So you all have one whole week to wish me off. I won't be leaving for the USA right away so you may see me around town even. I will be leaving June 8th and headed back to Seattle.
I have decided to try some other opportunites for next year so I won't be back here in Lucena. Instead I'm going to find a job in Latin America for a few months. I'm still looking for a job that I'd really like so that's why I'm not sure what country I will be in yet. Do you have any favorite places in Latin America?
I've have really enjoyed my time here in Lucena so thank you EVERYONE for making it so enjoyable. I have learned SO much about Spanish culture, food, language and much more. From all my traveling I have also been able to see so many places different than Lucena...in fact I just got back from Llanes (Asturias) this morning, I went for the weekend and LOVED IT! I can't wait to be able to spend the rest of my time here seeing a little bit more of Spain and then planning trips for the next time I come to visit Spain. Thanks again to everyone! I will miss ALL of you!
Side note: For those of you who do not know, I also have another blog where I post my trips. If you'd like to see where I've been and see some pictures you can check out my personal blog at:

(it's a bit more complicated because I use a lot of colloquial writing but you can always ask me questions if you don't understand)
Oh good trip of return. I hope that you have spent a magnificent stay in Lucena and you have had a good impression of Spain. I would like you tell me the things that you like more of Spain and the thing which you have seen more strange and the main differences between Spain and USA from your point of view please =). I hope that you have liked Spain and that you spend a good trip. Bye

Thank you for your good travel wishes! I have had a great time in Lucena and all over Spain. It's hard for me to tell you all the differences about Spain versus the USA because it is like a different world but I can try to explain a few things to you.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first got here everything was so different, the trees, the way the town smelled, people yelling, and literally everything else seemed so different. Over time i began to get used to everything but I still think they're different, at least from my city. Obvious examples of differences are the food, having siesta and the general schedule of everything.
I think, at least in Lucena, people seems to be relaxed and don't really worry about time where as in my city you HAVE to be on time including when you meet with your friends. Also, in my city everything is open everyday from at least 9am to 5pm but usually until 10pm or so. And even with those hours we have MANY stores that are open 24hrs therefore you can always get what you need no matter what time of day. So when I arrived and realized that everything was closed for a few hours during the middle of the day it was a big shock. The only times when everything is closed in my city are on 2 holidays, thanksgiving day and new years day (and still there are a few places open like gas stations). The adjustment was not too difficult but it just meant i had to think ahead.
Another big difference is people in Lucena (and Andalucia in general) are very loud, in my opinion they basically yell even to someone right next to them. In Seattle, and most parts of the states, that would seem really strange and wonder why they were being so loud. People may even get angry because someone is being so loud but it depends on the situation. For example, when I've been in classes here the students tend to be very loud and even after saying be quiet they get loud again. In Seattle that wouldn't be tolerated at all and you would be get detention or they would call your parents if it happened too many times. It's just a different culture and people respond to things in different ways.
Again, there are MANY more examples of differences between the two places but one thing to keep in mind is that this happens any place you go in the world. Even in the USA there are BIG differences between one place and the next just because the country is physically very big! I think the best way for you to understand the differences is to experience it for yourself. I recommend you come check out Seattle ;)Though anywhere you go, you will begin to understand that people are just different and have different habits and customs. I think its a wonderful experience that everyone should have, it opens your eyes up to so much.
I hope that helped...if you have more questions, just ask!
Is a sorrow that the course has ended. when finished the course everyone returns with his family .. I hope that this year you have happened the time very well with us, though we have behaved a bit badly jeje, but I hope that you take a few good recollections to yourself on how it is Lucena and the rest of Spain, some day that I will be going to visit your city (Seattle) and to know how it is all there, sera a great experience. Good-bye

@ Rosa- I did like the Holy week of Lucena but I really only saw a few days. I noticed there are definately differences between the processions in the North (Toledo) and in the South (Lucena). I will have to show my friends all the pictures I have of the processions in Lucena!
ReplyDelete@ Juan- There are many reasons that I won't be returning next year. One important one is that I want to travel to other places and practice even more Spanish. That is why I'm very interested in going to South America. I'm hoping to learn a lot where ever I go next! (I think I would love Argentina, thanks for the recommendation)
